Gen. H.J. Kilpatrick: new pictures added

I've added some new pictures to the H.J. Kilpatrick article.

New York Times, 1901:
There's a new Georgia Historical Marker at the Nash Battlefield just for "L'il Kil" about 1 1/2 hours south of where I live. I'm planning a trip there to add more pictures of the marker and the battlefield soon.

Alastair McIntyre's Electric Scotland is a huge website. My article in it's original form is there, and I'm proud to say it's been in the top 5 if you Google "Gen. H.J. Kilpatrick" for about 2 years now (number 1 today! woohoo!). But they're missing out on the updates here. I'll get to the Nash Battlefield soon and post those pictures.

The Chronicles Of Clan Colquhoun

James Pearson's fine publication is out for spring. You can subscribe here, or click on the Chronicle notice to the right.

The picture on the cover is of Helen Colquhoun (1753-1834).

Cowans of Northern Ireland

Thanks to William Cowan for this message:

"Saw your site on the net and wanted to let you know that there are Cowans living here in Northern Ireland. My family are mostly living in Belfast but my grandfather lived in Maghera which is county Londonderry. I work as a missionary for Belfast city mission which was established in 1827 by Irish presbyterians. I hope you will be blessed in promoting the ideals of our clan.

- William Cowan"

Ross Colquhoun, Walter Reed Army Medical Center

We ran across an interesting article that mentioned Ross Colquhoun who works for Walter Reed.

The 0riginal article states:

"Ross Colquhoun, who coordinates the hunting and fishing program at Walter Reed..."

We also found he's been a firearms instructor.

Thanks for your service, Ross!

William Gourlay Colquhoun Of the Canadian Army

Capt. Colquhoun recorded as the 11th soldier down in the post about the Canadian Great War Project is mentioned in another blog about the Benner Family in WWI.

"Lieut. (W.G.) COLQUHOUN who had previously gone out to make reconnaissance never returned." (preserved in a diary)

The Gathering 2009

An international Gathering of the Clans for 2009 will be held in Edinburgh July 25th & 26th. Their website is here at The Gathering.

There are suggestions for accommodations and descriptions of events listed there. Thanks to the Clan Colquhoun Society Of the UK for acquiring a Clan tent at this event.

We know the US president Jim Kilpatrick and his wife Becky are planning to attend.

8th Annual Hussar Award

I'm so late on this for 2009! A few years ago they started publishing the picture in the program, and I hope I sent it in time to make the publish cut off. This is the original picture:

It was actually taken in Australia when they had a little well deserved time off from duty in New Guinea. That's a parrot on R.C.'s arm. Here's what the framed award will look like:

"1759--Samuel Colquhoun (Calhoun), Sc.(South Carolina)"

This interesting note was found on "Suite101.com" about genealogy:
"A Scottish physician's notebook, found before 1925, lists by name, and city or state, American students at a Scottish university between 1756 and 1765...Most Were Aspiring Physicians from Pennsylvania and the South".

A Message from our President

This gives me an excuse to use an early picture of our president, Jim Kilpatrick. This is from the 1980's at the Savannah Scottish Games, about the first time I met him.

Jim writes:

"Last year at Glasgow, KY, the Games held their first ever Haggis making contest. First prize went to my Daughter-in Law, Heather Kilpatrick. So now when I take her Haggis to the many events that I'm invited to ,to give the 'Address to a Haggis' I introduce it as 'Heavenly Haggis by Heather'. It goes over really big. It's Laura's receipt that a lot of the people call 'a Laura Haggis'.

We will be at Gatlinburg, Loch Norman, and of course, Glasgow.

Slainte,

Jim"

Steve and Mary Hudson will man the tent at Loch Norman, NC. Mike and Starr Walker will host Gatlinburg, TN for the first time this year.

My wife & I will be at Savannah this May. Both sides of my family were orginally on the NC coast area (like New Bern), then received land grants in 1801 from service in the Revolution, and have extensively populated the Savannah area ever since...if you vacation down there, you'll no doubt brush shoulders with one of my cousins before you leave.

Fort Ticonderoga Scottish Festival & Black Watch Memorial

We don't have anyone at this event, yet, to be held June 20, 2009. I just finished "His Excellency: George Washington" on audio book last month and would love to attend this myself if I had the time and money.

Unfortunately, we can't go to them all but I'm happy to post this in case you find you can attend next June.

Maine Highland Games

Corey Gilpatrick writes: ..."A picture from this years Maine games.
We had a great games, the weather was great!!! Had about a dozen folks come by and get information.
Hope the winter is going well for you.
-Corey Gilpatrick"

Corey was kind enough to take over tent duties from Lois Seamon a few years ago who manned this tent for several years. Lois still attends the games. As a former Navy Signalman, I love seeing your State flag along with the Ensign at your tent, Corey.

Looks like the Men of the St. Andrews Society of Maine made a fund rasing calendar for this year. Corey, you're not in that picture, are you? Well, good for you if you are!

The next Maine Highland Games will be held August 15, 2009.
