Sir Iain at The Somme

The Imperial War Museum in London holds Sir Iain's war diary from World War I. Many stories about Sir Iain during WWI are usually situated during his time at Ypres. He was also at the Somme.

Malcolm Brown had access to Sir Iain's diary. Add to this his knowledge of the events happening around the Scots Guards' position and Mr. Brown creates a fascinating description of what our past Chief went through during wartime. Sir Iain's first impression of a tank was that it was a "Land Creeper".

Another segment of Sir Iain's diary was used here:

I have Sir Iain's diary, or part of it, on microfilm, written in his own hand. It's very hard to read. It has some photographs inserted in the diary which I think have never been made public. Most appear to be brother soldiers and scenes Sir Iain encountered during the war. One is obviously of himself but not labeled. I'd like to see these made available one day as we approach the 100th anniversary of of the world changing events the our Chief lived through.

As far as we know the highest rank Sir Iain attained was Lieutenant Colonel in the Reserve Of Officers in 1920 in the Scots Guards.

This dance was written by two Colquhoun officers in the Black Watch. From the description on youtube:

"This is a demonstration of the Kandahar Reel, which took place In Aberdeen at the start of Dance Scottish Week. A Published Copy of the dance is available from www.rscds.org and www.soldierscharity.org priced £4. £2.00 goes to ABF The Soldiers Charity (Scotland).The Kandahar Reel is a new country dance devised by two serving army officers of The Black Watch as a tribute to their fallen comrades. They devised it in September 2009 while on active service in the Kandahar Region of Afghanistan. Elements of the dance to watch out for include the "hands across" which symbolise both the Chinook Helecopter and the single blades of a Black Hawk . These figures are normally done once round in four bars. As soldiers are constantly exhorted to give 150% these figures are done one and a half times in the same number of bars! Other elements to watch out for include; team work and offering a helping hand as they board the helecopter. It is a challenging dance. This year we rented a tent, already set up, so that we wouldn’t have to fight the wind. So naturally, we had no wind. Just a gentle breeze all weekend with a few gusts on Saturday. The only rain we had was a heavy downpour on Thursday night, so all in all, it was a perfect weekend to celebrate our 15th anniversary of hosting the Colquhoun tent. When we arrived home Monday afternoon, we checked weather.com for the Loon weather. It was a cool 56 and the wind was 15 with gusts to 29. So nice of it to hold off until after the Games.

Speaking of hosting a tent, we had several past and present Colquhoun tent representatives stop by: Chuck and Ann Stoodley from Florida , Rosalie and Lance Oliver from New York and Corey and Laura Gilpatrick from Maine . Corey would like us to pass on the word that he has relaunched his web site http://clancolquhounofthenortheast.blogspot.com/. He leads off with the story of the 3rd Gurkha Regiment, which was raised by Sir Robert Colquhoun in 1815 and who adopted the Colquhoun tartan.

We had many visitors stop by, including those we like to call ‘regulars’ and many for the first time, who we hope will become ‘regulars’. We also had the usual number of non-Colquhoun’s who were just looking for information and from whom we always learn something about other clans. It seems that hosting a tent is a never ending learning experience.

Dr. Curtis and Lynn Penney were in town from North Dakota for their annual visit. Curtis always competes in solo piping competition and this year he was pleased to win two 2nd place medals. Well done and congratulations.

Deborah Cahoon (Didick) and her daughter, Erika Brien, marched with us in the Parade of Clans. Deborah has done much research on William Cohoone of Block Island , RI , her 8ggrandfather. He was taken prisoner at the Battle of Dunbar in 1650 and sent to the colonies as an indentured servant. He is considered to have been the first Colquhoun in North America . Deborah very graciously presented us with a copy of her book, Famous and Infamous Cahoons. Many thanks, Deborah.

Ken Marsh returned after an absence of a couple of years. Ken has always been very helpful in assisting us in manning the tent and he also marched with us. Welcome back and thanks, Ken.

When you only see people once a year, and then only for a very short time, it’s hard for us to associate names and faces. Sam is very proud of himself for recognizing David and Jean O’Sullivan this year. Hang in there, Joe Kirkpatrick. Your time will come.

Kathy (Ingram) Byrne, whose husband John is the brother of Dave Byrne, 2nd Vice President and New England Commissioner of Clan Buchanan Society International and maker of Sam’s walking/leaning stick, stopped by. Her daughter was married in 2007 and since it was a Scottish wedding, Dave had borrowed some Colquhoun tartan from us to display.

Speaking of Clan Buchanan, they were Honored Clan this year and had their AGM here. Dave said that they had close to 300 members show up. It sure looked like it with Buchanan tartan and Black Lion T-shirts everywhere. Sam was able to talk a couple of times with Buck Buchanan, a Past President of the Society. We hadn’t seen Buck since our California days 6 years ago.

Thanks to all of the others, too numerous to mention, for stopping by and showing your support. We appreciate it and it makes hosting the tent worthwhile.

And last, but not least, a special welcome to new members Richard Rohla and Rick Tustin. Thank you for your interest in the Society.

Entertainment wise, Red Hot Chili Pipers and Albannach, both from Scotland , Brother (who we hadn’t seen in about 10 years), The Brigadoons, Alex Beaton (an old California favorite of ours) and Rathkeltair all provided us with good music.

Friday evening we went to dinner with our ‘adopted sons’, Ken Marsh for Vicki’s Colquhoun side and Doug Williams (Clan MacFarlane New England Commissioner) for Sam’s MacFarlane side. We had planned to go to Vita’s but it was closed, so we went to the one and only Mexican restaurant, which used to be our Thursday night stop after set up. It apparently has new owners (again) and while the food wasn’t bad, service was terrible. We will take that one off our list. We did, however, discover two new places that we highly recommend – The Common Man and Brittany ’s Café, both at the Kancamagus Motor Lodge, just down the hill from the Games.

That’s it for this year and we will see you all again at Loon Sept. 16-18, 2011, if not sooner.

I couldn't figure out why I had some trouble finding this article in my own blog until I realized it was originally published within the first post where I reproduced the most recent newsletter of the time three years ago without its own heading. We'll fix that right here by reproducing Callie's article along with some pictures of Dr. Calhoun's mausoleum at historic Oakwood Cemetery. FIRST OPTHAMOLOGIST IN THE SOUTH

Abner Wellborn Calhoun was born in Newnan Georgia on April 16, 1845. He was the son of a prominent local physician Andrew B. Calhoun MD. During his formative years he was helped his father in his practice and was educated in the town of Newnan. His childhood was typical of a young person of that era until the war of Southern Secession broke out in the spring of 1861. Young Abner volunteered for duty in the Confederate army in that same year just before his sixteenth birthday. He served in the Army of Northern Virginia and fought in every major campaign for the entire four years of the war. He was wounded on four separate occasions and finally through the knee fighting in the trenches outside of Petersburg Virginia. He obviously had seen a great deal of field hospitals and physicians by the end of the war. Once Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in 1865 he walked home with what remained of his company to Atlanta where began his studies under his father. Once his preliminary studies were completed, Abner left Georgia to study medicine in earnest at the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA. He graduated with his M.D. in March of 1869 and returned to Georgia to start his own practice. During his early days of practicing medicine he took a great interest in the plight of the blind and as well patients with various ailments of the eye. In early 1871 he traveled to Europe to study the diseases of the eye which was relatively specialized and new field of medicine. He learned fluent German and studied with the brightest medical minds of the age in Vienna, Berlin, Paris and London. He returned to Atlanta four years later and began to practice and teach his specialty. He was the first to perform cataract surgeries in the South which must have seemed miraculous to the hundreds of patients whom he returned sight.
Dr. Abner W. Calhoun, was the region’s first specialist of the eye and ear, first taught at the Atlanta Medical College, which was originally established by his father, Andrew B. Calhoun, in 1854. He founded the college’s medical library with his own volumes (most written in German). This college later became the Emory University School of Medicine in 1915.
As the only scientifically trained ophthalmologist south of Maryland, Dr. Abner Calhoun was the specialist of choice for many a Southerner who had a serious eye problem before the turn of the century. He served as faculty president from 1900 until 1910. He and industrialist Andrew Carnegie provided funds to construct a medical college building that later became part of Grady Memorial Hospital, still a training ground for Emory residents. Unfortunately the only physical memorial to this pioneering southern physician was the medical library that was originally named in honor of Dr. AW Calhoun’s contributions to medicine and ophthalmology. The library was renamed in the late 1970’s during one of Emory University’s quests for wealthier benefactors. Although the library no longer bears his name there is a small room named after Dr. Abner W. Calhoun where you can see an exhibit of his original text books and instruments which started a great medical tradition that carries on to this day.

Several years ago (10-15?) we had a dinner with Clan Davidson on the Saturday night of the Stone Mountain Games (GA). In this picture left to right Harry Avery of Alexandria, VA; Bernice Calhoun; Tom Hodges; Judge Marcus Calhoun (Bernice's husband, they lived in Thomasville, GA); Harry's brother Dick Avery of Dallas, TX; Margaret Cohoon. This was held at the Doubletree Hotel near I-285 & Hwy 400. Harry, Bernice, and Marcus have all passed on now. We sponsor a Grade II piping trophy for Marcus and Bernice at the upcoming Stone Mountain games, held every 3rd weekend of October.

The Colquhoun of Luss coat-of-arms is obviously connected with the Cross saltire of the Earls of Lennox. But the Chiefs’ heraldic supporters of two greyhounds, together with their crest of a red stag’s head and motto Si Je Puis (“if I can”), are linked with an old tale. The story runs that the king asked the Colquhoun chief to recover Dumbarton Castle from his enemies, that Scots and Gaelic-speaking Luss replied in the Norman-French fashionable at Court at that date, “si je puis”, and then pursued a stag with his hounds past the castle gates. The garrison opened them to join in the chase, whereupon his clansmen rushed the castle and captured it for the king. This clan legend may well be true. For in 1424, at the height of heraldry, King James I decided to overthrow the too powerful Lennox family, and chose John Colquhoun 10th of Luss to be his Governor of Dumbarton Castle and to wrest it from them. Interested heraldists will find the original armorial mourning “hatchments” of several chiefs in the “laird’s loft” or raised family pew in the kirk at Luss: one of the two best sets surviving in all Scotland.
When the Colquhouns went to war, their Chief dipped a charred wooden cross in goat’s blood, and sent this Fiery Cross by relays throughout the entire district of Luss: the bearer, usually mounted on a garron pony, shouting out the name of the gathering-place as he passed. The Colquhoun muster-place was usually at Cnoc Elachan, still the clan “slogan”, the “armoury hillock” near Rossdhu. Here the armed clansmen assembled, many coming by boat as the quickest transport in those roadless days, others by hill tracks, and were issued with arms if they had none and with badges of hazel, the lucky plant of their clan, to wear in their bonnets.

Admiral Jonas Howard Ingram

Jonas Howard Ingram, born in Jeffersonville, Ind., 15 October 1886, graduated from the Naval Academy in 1907. Before World War I he served in several cruisers, destroyers, and battleships. As turret officer of Arkansas (BB-33), he established a world's record for firing 12-inch guns. On 22 April 1914 he landed at Vera Cruz, Mexico with the Arkansas battalion and was awarded the Medal of Honor for "skillful and efficient handling of the artillery and machine guns and for distinguished conduct in battle."

Normally I would be in Savannah next weekend, but due to a medical condition I won't be able to make it. The Savannah Games don't offer tents already set up so I don't think I can make the drive, set up my own tent, etc. You can find which games we're at on the Clan Colquhoun Games and Events Calendar.

Mike and Starr Walker will be at Gatlinburg the weekend of May 15th.

Two weekends later Darlene Parker will be at Greensboro, SC.

This event will also host His Royal Highness The Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex as a Distinguished Guest.

The weekend of June 12th one of us will be at Blairsville, GA. It's only 2 hours away from us. If I can throw some tartan material over a table with a bare bones tent set up, I think I can limp out there.

Beth Calhoun of Raleigh will be at the Grandfather Mountain, NC games again. Thanks, Beth! It's always held the 2nd weekend in July.

Held every 3rd weekend of July is the Elizabeth Celtic Festival in Colorado. We're hoping to have a tent there, too.

I have programs from 20 years ago. I've never been able to bring myself to throw them all away. Think about how much the program committee puts into these booklets that are no longer used after it's sold the day of the games.
This program is from the last known Highland Games we were honored clan in the US held just north of Greensboro, NC not too far from the Virginia state border. We took a group picture in front of the tent that was published in The Highlander.

The Military Appreciation Ceremony had at least two WWII veterans that were present.

Index To Orval Calhoun's Our Calhoun Family Vols. 1-4

I think I've finally figured out how to do this. For several years I've had the index some of our members made in the early 1990's of a 4 volume set of genealogy gathered by Canadian Orval Calhoun.
This index was originally sold for cost on 31/2 inch discs and was in an early MS/DOS form that couldn't even be read on my new computer without a special program.

Preface

Glen Ethier originally volunteered to index the books; Glen had done this professionally before he retired. We acquired 8 other volunteers (I have their names somewhere and will post them here when I find them again) including Bob Ed and Sue O'Connell. They each took a section of a volume and followed Glen and Bob's instructions to list each name mentioned.
It was decided to list the name first then the birthday. The reason for this was to distinguish people who have same name over the years. For instance, there are thousands of people named after John C. Calhoun, especially the first 100 years after the Civil War. The Roman Numeral after each entry is the volume (I through IV), then the page.

Copies of the books are mostly held by individuals. There are many copies in libraries and The Church Of The Latter Day Saints have all four volumes.

If I remember Orval's story correctly, he retired in the mid 1970's and took up researching his own family tree.

The search ended in Ireland; like many others he couldn't cross the Irish Sea to find out who originally came from Scotland. Like many of us he was seriously bit by the Genealogy Bug. He started attending Calhoun family reunions and Scottish games in the US and Canada and started collecting everyone else's genealogy. To prepare the first volume he typed out these genealogies on a manual typewriter (something readers under 50 years old have probably never experienced). The pages look like this:

The first volume was an immense success and people started voluntarily sending him their genealogies. One thing everyone should remember is everything in these books are only as accurate as what was submitted to him.

I know there are a few mistakes in the books. Corrections were published in later books when possible. Orval organized a "family reunion" at Clemson University in South Carolina (site of John C. Calhoun's home), but he died just before that happened. It was well attended and we were able to meet his widow, Glad. I feel the Clemson reunion and indexing of these books were a tribute to Orval and the Herculean effort it took to make these four volumes of Our Calhoun History.

I donated a pair of the index discs to my old library I spent a lot of time in growing up.

Sue Gilbert Acquires A Publisher For Alice Calhoun Book

Sue sent us an e mail recently saying she's made the next big step in the publication of her book about her cousin Silent Screen Actress Alice Calhoun: Alice in Hollywoodland The Life and Times of a Silent Screen Star

Sue was also featured in an article in her local newspaper recently:

"What if you could watch a 1920s video of your grandmother or other relative and see the way she was, but at 25?
Susann Gilbert can, almost. One of her relatives lives on in silent films, and her voice is in some clips.
Tracing her family roots, Gilbert found some interesting sparks in hunks of tedious research. But a member of her family tree who especially caught her attention was a first cousin of her grandfather: actress Alice Calhoun. Naturally, Gilbert, a former performer, was interested in learning more about the silent star born in 1900. But she couldn't find much. "In Hollywood, people come and go. People get very forgotten," Gilbert said.
When the Mount Pleasant resident searched for information on the Web, she kept finding the same biography repeated on different sites and with mistakes, including eight different birth dates.
To set the story straight, Gilbert launched her own Web site to tell her relative's story.

After talking with some others, I'm pretty sure of the year. If you think it's wrong please let me know. Also, feel free to use the comment section of these posts at any time. If it weren't for Sitemeter I wouldn't have any idea if anyone was looking at this most of the time. Just so you know, we've had over 5,000 hits from all over the world since the blogs conception. A lot of people will spot an image on Google and take a gander. A lot of them don't even use the same alphabet we do! Welcome, everyone!

Some kind of weird weather pattern invaded us that Sunday morning at the Parade Of Tartans. It was chilly, too. Grandfather Mountain, NC in July doesn't usually get weather like this although we have had some cold rains before. It's the elevation that kind of lifts us up out of the "Deep South" for July. We're half a mile up in MacRae Meadow; the peak of the mountain is a mile up. Supposedly the area attracted immigrant Scots and Scot-Irish to settle there because it reminded them of home. My ancestors (also from NC) hugged the coast. Even my MacMillan "Texas Bells" ended up outside of Galveston on the Gulf Of Mexico.
I'm pretty sure this is Stephanie Fox and Danny Potter. Stephanie is a nurse and always works the MacMedic tent at the games. I appreciate that she wears her Colquhoun scarf and takes time when she can to jump in the Parades with us!

Danny, who passed away a few years ago, was a bit of a legend at all the Mid Atlantic games. The Johnson City, TN native had been coming to GMHG since he was a lad when his parents first brought him. Danny parked a well used, small RV right at the place where the shuttle bus lets visitors out. It was known as Fort Potter. I primitive camped at Fort Potter in front of his RV the season before he died, something I told him for years I wanted to do, and have always been thankful I made the effort that year.

I've been looking for this for a while. This was sent to me in April, 1998. Lucy was one of the original ladies at the Savannah Colquhoun tent from the very beginning, and was the last of the original group to attend the festival a few years ago. Her granddaughter was gracious enough to take time off that weekend of the year and bring her to us for several years.

We think this is from 1994. Lucy is on the right. Adrienne Roberts in the center talking to Andy Calhoun. Can someone tell us who is on the left? We can't remember, but it looks like her name tag begins with "Marilyn".

Boy, are we ever late getting this report out. This has been a long, boring and wet summer. It seems like our lack of attendance at Scottish activities this year has drained us of our motivation. It’s time to get back in the groove and get moving again.

The Festival at Fort Ti was small but nice. It was their first year and we have to give them credit for attempting it, considering the economy. They had advertised band competition but apparently dropped it, perhaps when they saw what it would cost. It sure doesn’t come cheap.

We had helped them by furnishing local leads to clans and vendors. When we couldn’t get anyone to bring a MacFarlane tent, Sam borrowed the banner from MacFarlane’s New England Commissioner and set up his own tent while Vicki hosted the Colquhoun tent. Sam insisted that since there were several MacFarlane’s in the Black Watch at the battles of 1758 and 1759, they should be represented. Other clans were Dunbar, Hay, Donald and one other that we are embarrassed to say that we have forgotten their name. They were a young couple from New York City who had rented a car to come up to the Fort and this was their first time hosting a tent. There were also 3, maybe 4, Saint Andrew Society tents there. It was fairly quite so it gave us a chance to talk to Bill and Betty Wolf, of Clan Hay, whom we hadn’t seen for a while. Several reenactors stopped by to chat and Sam, who went to high school in Ticonderoga , was able to reminisce with some of the locals. Not many Colquhoun’s up in that area, but Justin Potter, of Crown Point , NY , (another famous battle site) stopped by. Thanks, Justin, for making Vicki’s day. There is a good chance that many of you didn’t realize that Potter is a sept of Colquhoun.

In September we are off to California for our son’s wedding. We arrive back in NY at midnight on Tuesday, Sept. 16th, which gives us Wednesday to pack up all of our gear so that we can head out to the New Hampshire Highland Games at Loon Mountain on Thursday to set up the tent. If you come by the tent and we are napping, please wake us up. We look forward to seeing many of you there.

For those of you in the Hartford , Conn. area, we would like to call your attention to the musical event called Pipes in the Valley on Sept. 26. In addition to massed bands, they will feature the Red Hot Chilli Pipers from Scotland , who will also be at the Loon Mt. Games the weekend before. Also Seven Nations, who were at Loon in ’07 and ’08; Gaelic Storm, who were in the movie ‘Titanic’; The Wicked Tinkers, from the West Coast, who were one of our favorites when we were doing the California Games circuit in the 1990’s and early 2000’s; and Mactalla Mor, a favorite at many New England Games. Annie Colquhoun McNaught

Annie Colquhoun McNaught is the grandmother of Darlene Parker who hosted our tent at the Greenville Scottish festival this year. Darlene writes:

"We continue to have many Colquhoun and McNaught relatives in Scotland, Canada, and the US. My grandparents immigrated from Glasgow (my grandfather) and from Larkhall (my grandmother) in the early 1920's. However they met each other at St. Andrew's Hall in Detroit, Michigan and married in the US. My grandmother, Annie Colquhoun, was one of eight children, three of which remained in Scotland and never immigrated. We have lot of other info as well. My grandfather died in October, 1984. My grandmother died in April, 2000 at the age of 99 years."

Darlene shared the following correspondence with us between two law offices after Annie's sister died. It was a unique opportunity for her grandmother to write down a family history.

We had lots of visitors to the Colquhoun tent. This is the 10th Earl of Glasgow, the Right Honourable Patrick Robin Boyle.

Lord Glasgow was very friendly and talked to us for a long time outside our tent.

Lots of kids with "passport" books. It's absolutely necessary to have a crest stamp at festivals that pass out these books. If you don't, you end up writing the name of your clan in these books a few dozen times during the day. I also have a couple of Scottie stamps I add to our crest impression.

Some clan had made up the pin on the little girl above and was passing it out to the kids. It says "Yes I'm Scottish". We were asked several times where they came from but we never did find out (I wanted one, too).

Most of the vendors are located under this huge tent. Most everyone loves this arrangement because it keeps them out of the direct sunlight and out of the rain.

Finally set up and ready for business!

This is Clann Nan Con, a reenactment group. Clann Chief Britt Brinson is a Calhoun on his mom's side. Often he wears an Ancient Colquhoun kilt in honor of her, but today Britt's son is wearing our tartan.

My dad served in the Georgia Hussars, a descendant of this group. When it's not too late Britt will form up a few of the Darien Highlanders to help present our athletic award. We ran real late Saturday, so no group picture this year!

Mike Derrick of Columbia, SC was the winner of the 2009 Georgia Hussar award for Athlete of the Day.

This is the 100th anniversary of native Savannian's Johnny Mercer's birth. His niece spoke at the opening ceremonies. The Savannah Scottish games took advantage of the occasion celebrate Mercer's Scottish roots.

Mercer's Minstrels played a set in honor of Johnny.

Riley Lanier, descended from a Cowan on his mom's side, took time out to play at our tent.

Riley and his parents Steve and Elaine (Lainey) drove down from the Charleston area for the day so Riley could play and compete with the Charleston Police Pipes and Drums.

Lainey (Cowan) Lanier had a beautiful Colquhoun scarf that had been embroidered with her monogram.

Lainey makes hand crafted items, some quite unusual.

Riley won first in solo pibroch, 2/4 march, and overall piper for his class that day! Also the Charleston band came in first.

On the right is Ellen Cowan with her daughter. Ellen, originally from South Africa, is a local artist and can be found at Sweet Art By The Sea.

We were also delighted to see Ron and Toni Calhoun...
and Bill and Joan Earnhart! Joan has been busy searching for the ever elusive Calhoun ancestor. We had a chat about the John C. Calhoun reunion at Clemson held several years ago. It was organized by Canadian Orval Calhoun. Orval passed away just before the event was held, so many of us didn't get to meet him.

Sunday was spent relaxing on Tybee Island where we like to stay each year.

Michael Davidson at the 2002 Grandfather Mountain Highland Games Parade Of Tartans:

Michael Davidson, US president of Clan Davidson for nine years, died February 13, 2009. He was only 55. Michael had been president for 9 years. Most of us in the Southeastern Scottish community have known Michael and Elaine for a lot longer than that and were greatly saddened by his passing.
One of the reasons I wanted to make the unplanned trip to Rural Hill was Clan Davidson has their annual meeting there. A young piper from the Loch Norman Pipe Band played the Davidson March at the meeting.
Clan members listening to the piper. Eleanor on the right, who I met just by chance in the campground Saturday morning, works at the games. She gave me a helpful lift in her golf cart to the Colquhoun tent that morning.
After the meeting Richard Halliley, past president of Clan Davidson and interim president now, pours a salute to Michael in a large quaich which was offered to the clan members present.
The quaich used was actually mine, with a Colquhoun crest stamped in the center. This was originally Harry Avery's quaich which I bought from his estate after Harry passed.
Clan Davidson's crest is similar to ours:

A resolution was passed at the meeting that Clan Davidson would purchase a similar quaich and silver tray to be displayed at festivals and meeting. The tray will be engraved with past president's names and other Davidson notables.

Loch Norman (Charlotte, NC) 2009

The 16th Loch Norman Highland Games (subtitled Rural Hill Scottish Festival) was held last weekend outside of Charlotte, NC. I'd had it in mind to make a surprise visit if my herinated disc would allow and I did it! but I'm paying for it this week. It was a great weekend and I'm so glad I went.

The site of the festival is really out in the middle of nowhere. I've seen festivals held in remote places because of a place name or event wither and die, but Loch Norman continues to draw big crowds and be as popular as ever. It's a year round rendez vous for the local population. The site was originally a plantation owned by the Davidson family. Here's what the first house looked like:

One of the big draws year round for Rural Hill is that it's an historic working farm. I wished I'd found out the name of this calf. I first met the calf as a visitor in back of our clan tent.

Sharon & I attended the first several Loch Norman Games. Jack Mobley of Clan Davidson made up a sign back then that warned Colquhouns and several other clans that they couldn't be caught unattended near the cattle and sheep fields (tongue in cheek reference to a history of cattle stealing). I was directed to a couple of different places to look for a sign, but I couldn't find one left. I have a copy of the original somewhere and will post it when I find it.

Calhoun Project: Family Tree DNA

Several years ago. Larry Calhoun of Glasgow, KY started a DNA project at Family Tree DNA. The DNA test is a simple swab (like a Q Tip) that you run on the inside of your cheek, put in a sterile envelope, and mail back to the DNA headquaters (my sample was mailed to Houston, TX). There are different priced tests depending on how specific your DNA will match other participants. The cheapest test for a paternal test is currently $99 (12 marker test). The Calhoun Project public page is here. Last November Larry Calhoun sent out an e mail that stated: "As my 83rd birthday is gone I am slowing down and must, regretably, step down as your admin. DAN MARK CALHOUN, email: dcalhoun15@comcast.net has agreed to become the Calhoun Surname Group Admin. EFFECTIVE 1 JANUARY 2009. I am sure he will do a great job. It has been a pleasure to work with you all in trying to find our ancestors, and I wish you all the success in the world. Last weekend my herniated disc and I made the 6 hour trip to the Loch Norman Highland Games outside of Charlotte for a surprise visit! Family Tree DNA had a booth at the event conveened by Cynthia Ann Wells.
Even though all the information you need is at their website, it was great to acutally talk to a representative face to face.

I had originally signed up for the Calhoun Project, but after I found out a little more I realized ideally every match you make should be someone who bears your last name (yourself, your father, his father, etc.). I've switched my "membership" to the Hodges Project. You are notified for any match you have no matter what name it's matched with. What's interesting is I, and several other people I've talked to, have made matches with participants who don't bear our last names. With all but one instance it was with someone who didn't know their ancestry past a couple of generations. There are several explanations for this explained briefly here.

There are also projects for the other Clan sept names including Cowan which has 154 members!, Ingram (Ingraham), Kirkpatrick (Kilpatrick), Potter, and King.

There's a new Georgia Historical Marker at the Nash Battlefield just for "L'il Kil" about 1 1/2 hours south of where I live. I'm planning a trip there to add more pictures of the marker and the battlefield soon.

Alastair McIntyre's Electric Scotland is a huge website. My article in it's original form is there, and I'm proud to say it's been in the top 5 if you Google "Gen. H.J. Kilpatrick" for about 2 years now (number 1 today! woohoo!). But they're missing out on the updates here. I'll get to the Nash Battlefield soon and post those pictures.

"Last year at Glasgow, KY, the Games held their first ever Haggis making contest. First prize went to my Daughter-in Law, Heather Kilpatrick. So now when I take her Haggis to the many events that I'm invited to ,to give the 'Address to a Haggis' I introduce it as 'Heavenly Haggis by Heather'. It goes over really big. It's Laura's receipt that a lot of the people call 'a Laura Haggis'.

We will be at Gatlinburg, Loch Norman, and of course, Glasgow.

My wife & I will be at Savannah this May. Both sides of my family were orginally on the NC coast area (like New Bern), then received land grants in 1801 from service in the Revolution, and have extensively populated the Savannah area ever since...if you vacation down there, you'll no doubt brush shoulders with one of my cousins before you leave.

Unpublished Photo Of Sir Iain

This past year unpublished Life magazine photos (seen here) were released on the internet for educational purposes. A set of these includes a photo of "Sir Iain Colquhoun (L) attending the celebration of Bonnie Prince Charlie's Bicentenary for which he made the arrangements."

Sir Iain is escorting Sir Donald Cameron who made the opening speech at the celebration.

Here is a listing of people listed on this site who had some reference to the name "Colquhoun". I was going to include listing for each sept name, but the listings for "Cowan" alone was 91. This site is easily accessable with a great search engine. The only person left off the list was buried in a churchyard with "Colquhoun" in the name.
